Yeah, great movie, cute scene, hooray Ferris Bueller is very cool.
What kind of sunbathing is that? Look at them. They’re both completely in the shade. The sun is coming from behind them and creating a halo for the blonde girl, but other than that I have no idea what they could be getting out of this experience.
The movie is set in Illinois and, according to the Wikipedia page, takes place on a spring day. In Illinois, it’s not uncommon for winter conditions to persist well into March and April. It’s true that the climate in Chicago in the spring can get up to one hundred degrees, but it can also get as low as seven degrees and, given Ferris’s jeans and long-sleeved jacket, I’m assuming it isn’t 100 or anywhere near it. Ferris and Sloane went swimming earlier, so it must be KIND of warm, but not warm enough NOW that Ferris feels compelled to take his warm-looking jacket off even while he’s sprinting at top speed. Even if it WAS an unseasonably warm day in Chicago, it likely wouldn’t STAY warm late into the afternoon, which is when this scene takes place (let’s call it 4:00pm).
So these two women are wearing bathing suits outside, in the shade, facing away from the sun at one of the cooler times of day during a fairly cool (or at least not hot) time of the year. And they have big beach towels. Why? For the pool? Bullshit. Are you telling me that this backyard has a pool that we can’t see? Look at all of that unused real estate between the house and the chairs; why wouldn’t they put the pool there? How the crap deep is this yard?
People might question why the blonde girl so eagerly shakes Ferris’s hand when she SHOULD be concerned that a stranger just ran through her backyard, but I actually think it’s perfectly in keeping with her character, because she is a woman who sunbathes in the shade at cool times in the late afternoon. Every decision she makes is questionable; not raising a fuss when Ferris trespasses is just another misstep in a long line of missteps for her.
(This is what it’s like to watch movies with me.)
